SES San Jose 2005

Well it's getting close...only a few weeks from the Search Engine Strategies Conference and Expo 2005 in San Jose, CA., August 8-11. (http://www.jupiterevents.com/sew/summer05/index.html)

I have been approved to speak on a Q&A Panel in regards to linking on day three of the conference, and am very excited by this prospect. Anyone else going to the conference? Please let me know and I would be happy to meet with you and discuss the latest in the World of SEM. If you are considering going: I would highly suggest it. The conference allows people interested in the world of search engine marketing to learn about a variety of topics. The keynote presentation will feature Danny Sullivan and the CEO and Director of AskJeeves, Steve Berkowitz.

The event last year was a blast, and you can still find my recaps at http://www.instantposition.com/website-promotion/marketing-news/index.cfm. The highlights after hours last year were the party thrown by Urchin as well as the Google dance, which gave us all an inside view of the life at Googleplex.

Hope to see you there! Please comment with any questions or your own SES stories.

I will be covering sessions for Searchengineroundtable.com. See the info and schedule here.

Google PageRank update and other recent news

So it seems that Google is undergoing a PageRank update. Whoopdee! Many recent articles have pointed out that PageRank is really just what Google wants you to think it feels about a site. I am getting more and more disillusioned by the whole PageRank "show."

Many link brokers have established entire business models based on selling high PageRank sites. I once again must caution: DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE! PageRank is ok as a gauge of potential value of the link, but two far more important factors are relevancy and traffic. Will this site get traffic to yours? Is the site relevant? Is it just a directory aiming to “work” the search engine linking algorithms. These are the real questions you should ask your self when linking.

Don’t get over enthuses or depressed by PageRank or lack thereof. As I have said in the past…link using relevance and you will not go wrong. There are some good discussions regarding this topic as well as the difference between link “models” and “programs” at SEW forums. Here: http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=6838, here: http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=6616, and here: http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=5889.

Please feel free to comment or login to SEW and comment there.
